As Above, So Below delves into the universe of Norse mythology. The three-movement work for percussion orchestra centers on Yggdrasil, the “Tree of Life,” with branches that extend to all nine of the worlds that make up the Norse mythological universe. The tree’s three roots connect three of these worlds—Asgard, Niflheim, and Jötenheim—which make up the three movements of the piece.

Spanish for the color blue, Azul is a two-movement work that explores the contemplative mood of the vast icy-blue glaciers of Antarctica (with the harsh, metallic sounds of crotales and vibraphone) and the infernal unpredictability of sapphiric flames (with blazing-fast tempos and tossed-around figures between the flute and marimba).

Blaze is a balanced percussion septet pitting the keyboards versus the battery instruments. It draws inspiration from the following Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, as in “trail-blaze” or a blaze on a trail: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Based on themes and motives from the hymn "Lord, I'm Coming Home," this lovely work for euphonium and piano was commissioned by euphonium player Christian Folk to celebrate to the life of his grandmother, Virginia. The piano lays a purely accompanimental role to the long lyrical lines of the euphonium throughout.

Commissioned by Dr. Lisa Rogers of Texas Tech University, the two-movement Concerto for Vibraphone was inspired by two opposing poems by Pablo Neruda - one depicting a rainy night (Night's Song) and the other a bright & sunshiny day (Enchanted Light). The showy solo solo part may be performed with piano, percussion ensemble, wind ensemble or full orchestra.

The Cry emulates the passionate melismatic singing and sparse guitar playing found in cante jondo ("deep song") and flamenco music. The virtuosic singing is emulated throughout the ensemble in long flourishes that are full of twists and turns. The antiphonal castanet players help bring in the flamenco elements to the piece, as well as the sounds of flamenco dancers tapping, stomping and clapping in rhythm.

Inspired by the Dutch folktale “Wichardsage” (from The Sagas of Veluwe), DrakenVuur tells the story of a deadly fire-breathing dragon that lived under a medlar tree devouring every living creature it encountered. Nearby, Wichard was in love with Margaret and asked her father for her hand in marriage. Her father said he needed to prove himself worthy, so the disappointed, yet determined, Wichard set o to slay the dragon. As Wichard was defeating the dragon, the creature bellowed a terrible scream that sounded like “Gelre! Gelre!” Wichard rode in victory back to marry Margaret and built a castle on the site of the medlar tree battle and named it “Gelre,” which would later become Gelderland.

Inspired by the Griffin & Sabine Trilogy of books by Nick Bantock, An Extraordinary Correspondence takes its title from the subtitle of the first book. Bantock tells the mystical story of these two people by inviting readers to examine handmade postcards and letters that are sent back and forth. The 6-1/2 minute piece unfolds in much the same way as the book and is divided into six main sections, each describing a mood or quoting a phrase.

Gate City Snapshot transports you back to 1927 Greensboro NC, when The Depot train station and The Carolina Theatre both opened. Imagine a leisurely trip on the southbound train to the city to go to the movies. Now imagine you’ve fallen asleep on the train and awaken inside the movie on a runaway train. Do you have what it takes to stop the train before it hits the end of the line? Gate City Snapshot plays out like a movie soundtrack, complete with the Hollywood ending!

Commissioned for the inaugural High Point University Piano Competition, The Giving Tree Variations draws its inspiration from two sources. The first is a beautiful metal tree sculpture on the campus of HPU, which symbolizes the university’s holistic approach to learning. Whenever I see the sculpture, it reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s classic book “The Giving Tree,” which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and provided the 2nd source of inspiration for the composition.

"Give Me Your Hand" is a lush wind band setting of the popular Irish harp tune "Tabhair Dom Do Lámh," written in the early 17th century by Rory Dall O'Cahan. Set in 3/4 time, this arrangement offers elasticity with several tempo & textural changes throughout, helping young performers to improve their musicality. Simple percussion parts add the perfect amount of color without overwhelming the winds.
