Still fairly new to writing for the low brass community, I was delighted (and surprised) to receive word that two of my pieces were selected as finalists in the 2014 International Tuba-Euphonium Association Harvey Phillips Excellence in Composition Award. Spitfire (for euphonium and vibraphone/marimba) is a finalist in the "Euphonium Featured in Chamber Music" category and Coming Home (for euphonium and percussion quintet) is a finalist in the "Euphonium in a Solo Role" category.
The full list of finalists was just posted on the ITEA blog. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 21st at the International Tuba & Euphonium Conference (ITEC) at Indiana University. Brian Meixner and I will be performing at the conference at 11:15am on Tuesday, May 20th. The program will include "Spitfire," Samuel Adler's "Four Dialogues for Euphonium & Marimba," and the world premiere of my new trio for euphonium, tuba, & percussion, "EvenStar."
